When I was a teenager I tried just about everything and finally had the best success with Tea Tree Oil (The Body Shop sell a good one) directly on bad pimples. Then I would twice daily cleanse with Witch Hazel (available from any good chemist or supermarket) and Rose Water. They are natural products to and very effective costing half the money of commercial brands which in time can be very debilatating on the skin.
I work for Nature’s Cure in marketing and product development and happened upon your post, so I thought I might be able to provide some helpful information.
The other poster is right to an extent – acne is caused by a combination of factors including internal and external ones. So you can’t say it’s just a skin issue, or just a hormonal issue… it can be both. The four basic factors that can work together and result in acne are:
1. Hormones
2. Increased oil (sebum) production
3. Changes inside your pores (hair follicles)
4. Bacteria
Pimples may begin with changes in your hormones that lead your pores to produce sebum. Ordinarily, sebum moves to the surface of the skin and carries out old skin cells and bacteria. But when production is overstimulated by hormonal changes, the sebum can clog pores, which can lead to an overgrowth of bacteria and subsequent inflammation (or zits).
So, if you’re concerned about treating the internal and external causes of acne, you can try Nature’s Cure 2-Part Acne Treatment, which comes with all-natural homeopathic tablets to balance your body from the inside and a 5% benzoyl peroxide cream to kill bacteria and clear existing pimples. Or, if you want to just stick to an anti-acne cleansing regimen, Nature’s Cure has a 3-step Papaya Skin Care System that is about a third the price of Proactiv by volume. It comes with an acne cleanser, toner and moisturizer that contain salicylic acid, a proven acne-fighting ingredient, as well as Papaya enzyme, which helps to open pores for deeper cleaning and provides exfloliating and skin-softening properties. If what you have is truely acne, and not just the occasional zit, then none of these things will really work. That’s because Acne is not caused by anything that has to do with the skin. It’s not a matter of cleanliness or anything like that. Acne is caused by hormones. You need to go to a dermatologist and get medication. Generally they treat acne with anti-biotics and Retin-A (I did this for years, didn’t work for me). Later, another doctor told me I should take Accutane. Accutane is the only 100% cure for acne. You take it for 3 months, and the Acne is gone for good, and will never come back. I took it, and have NEVER had acne return, not even a little. I wish knew about this when I first started getting acne, rather than 5 years later – it would have saved me from the small scaring that is on my face, and from very low-self esteem. Accutane does have some side effects however, so you’ll need to look into that.
VJ is right about the hormone stuff, i would see a dr. about it. sometimes birth control helps women with acne. you can also get facials to help with any extractions. as far as cleansers go, you wanna find one without parabins…organic if possible…and don’t forget to a toner.
Proactive works in the beginng but your skin would eventally get use to it quickly. It cost also, so I say drink plenty of water try not to touch your face when your hands are dirty, and the tea tree oil works.

Cetaphil
What I’ve had the best luck with is Biore. Simply because it’s gentle and doesn’t cause any more irritations.
it’s called Steel Brush.
