All of the over-the-counter acne medications contain either benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or triclosan. All three of them can cause irritation.
Of these, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are probably the most effective.
Benzoyl peroxide works by killing the bacteria in your skin, preventing the large pimples that are caused by bacteria. It also causes your skin to peel, preventing the pores from becoming clogged with oil. If it comes into contact with clothing or towels, it will probably bleach them.
Salicylic acid works pretty much the same way as benzoyl peroxide. It is however, pretty much the same medicine that it is aspirin, so if you’re allergic to that or have asthma, you probably shouldn’t use it.
Triclosan is an antibacterial, usually found in soaps. I wouldn’t recommend using this unless you can’t use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Overuse of it may lead to resistant-bacteria, and it probably won’t be as effective as the other medications anyway.
The brand that you buy does not matter. The $8 tube of Clearasil and the $2 tube of Walmart Acne Medicine have the same ingredients, and may even be made in the same factory.
Usually, what most people do is a twice daily routine of a salicylic acid containing wash, followed by a cream containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Some people may use toner or something like OXY Pads in between (usually containing salicylic acid), but the large amount of alcohol in them can dry out your skin, making your acne worse. If you do use toner, make sure you use an actual lotion (labeled moisturizer) afterward. Many of these have salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide already in them, so you can skip the cream and use this instead if you go that route.
Gently apply fresh lime juice dipped in a cotton ball on pimples and wash after 30 minutes if you don’t have a sensitive skin. More such solutions at http://usefulinfo-pimples.blogspot.com/
