Does Anyone Know What This Could Be? Dermatologists Don’t Know! (picture Attached)?
Ok here is a picture of someone I know that has a very difficult skin problem on the face that has persisted over years…
She has gone to a lot of dermatologists and they either don’t know, or say it’s rosacea or a form of acne. But everything they have given her has not worked.
She is currently on Accutane which is a really strong antibiotic. She is on a course of 5 months. She has taken it for 3 months now. It has not gotten better, if not even worse. They are open sores, with pus inside them, they feel like they have liquid in them. They scab over but then pop with the pus trickling out of them. She has them in several places on her face as you can see in the picture. She is devestated with this, and no one knows what this is. Does anyone have this problem, or does anyone know what it can possibly be? Also if anyone has taken accutane, can you tell me what it was for and if it worked?

Accutane is a HEAVY duty acne durg that is now mandated by the federal govnt. If I had to bet on it just from the picture I would say these are excoriations and possibly some form of pemphgis…all though i dont believe its usual presentation is facial…She needs to STOP picking (yes she IS picking) because the can and will become secondarily infected not to mention the nasty bug MRSA (dosent look there yet) and get to a board certified derm in you area who can do a punch biopsy on a couple of these and send them to a dermatopathologist (not a general pathologist) I would advise a culture as well just to be safe…good luck and let us know
I’ve never seen rosacea like that. I doubt that’s what it is.
Have the dermatologists performed biopsies on these sores? I’ve seen a photo of a form of skin cancer that looks like these, and I specifically remember that when a sore like that doesn’t heal, that’s a warning sign of that form of skin cancer. It could also be a bacterial infection. MRSA is known for causing sores that won’t heal. I can’t believe a dermatologist wouldn’t check for those things though, but if they haven’t, maybe your friend should throw them those ideas.
Accutane is used for severe acne, and it has varied results from the limited sources I’ve read. Wikipedia (great source, I know, lol) says that it’s used to help some forms of skin cancer. Hmm. It helps some people greatly and harms others.
My advice to your friend is to tell her to keep trying new dermatologists, maybe traveling to a special skin center, because if the symptoms are caused by something rare, it may take many different people to get an answer. Encourage her to become her own advocate, maybe she could try to research in medical journals and textbooks for possible ideas to share with these mystified doctors.
sorry i have no idea what is wrong wth her face but i do know that accutane is mainly used for acne. It kinda looks like she has a severre case of acne and she keeps poppin her pimples
Wow. I’m not sure exactly what those are, but they do NOT look like acne. They appear to be more like sores, not cystic acne. Based on your descriptions…I’d say it’s just something genetic.
One thing I can say is to tell your friend to take her accutane and INCINERATE the rest of it. That stuff is insanely potent and strong. Even if you have acne it can wreak havoc on your skin, and it’s probably hurting your friend if what she has isn’t acne. Now I can’t be certain that what she has isn’t acne; I’m just going on my best judgment here.
I’m disappointed in her dermatologist care. Try going to a general physician and see what happen. They have more generalized knowledge, so they could probably help your friend out if it’s deeper than a skin condition.
In the meantime, tell your friend to treat her skin as gently as possible to keep scars from forming, and not to pick at any scabs.
I don’t know much about dermatology. sorry
By seeing the site it can possible.
Try going to a health food store and ask the worker for an alternative “natural” remedy. Acne medicines are very harsh, and they burn my skin. It looks like hers would simply be irritated even more by that (but I don’t know, because I’m not a doctor).
Could it be an intense form of eczema or psoriasis?????
Go the the library and look up skin diseases (pictures) and see if any of them are similar. I work for a doctor, and he has a very thorough book that shows all types of skin ailments. You might even be able to find them on the net. Look under something like “skin ailment pictures” or “skin diseases/pictures.”
get a 2nd opinon from an infectious disease specialist -not Yahoo.
That’s not acne or rosacea. It looks like some sort of infection. Those are open wounds…..
I would get a second opinion…maybe from a doctor and not a dermatologist. Accutane is really only for acne and if it hasnt worked in 3 months then it wont work at all. Whenever I took Accutane, I saw results within 2 weeks. I had horrible acne on my face, back, and chest. Since I took it, I have no problems with acne and keep my skin looking good with Clinique products…
Has your friend tried Neosporin? From the picture, they really look like open sores that just need to heal.
I’m really shocked that a dermatologist put her on Accutane…that’s a very serious drug and has many many side effects like depression and suicide not to mention horrible birth defects….
