Cystic Acne. Any Substitute For Accutane? How Bad Can Accutane Get?
I had acne vulgaris when I was around 13. But it only lasted for a couple of years.
Now 24. About 3 years back (while studying in the US), it recurred. But it was much serious, it was something like cystic acne. They are normally huge, lie underneath the skin, and take a long time for the puss to occur and even longer time to heal.
They normally emerge at the same areas, particularly around the chin area, at the sides of the nose, and at the sides of the forehead.. There can be 6-10 “connected” pimples on the chin when it gets very bad.
While my acne problem doesn’t recur 100% of the time (mainly due to stress, I surmise), it really hurts, more so emotionally.
Please help. How effective is Accutane. And if there is any alternative to that? As I read it can be really harmful to certain individuals.
Thank you for your answer. It means a lot to me.

I had Cystic Acne back when I was in college. I took Accutane because nothing else worked. In short, its been 20 yrs or so since and I rarely get any more pimples. The treatment can be harsh, but IMO, the results were truly worth it. Some say depression is associated with its use(yes, I experienced that at the time), so be aware of that.
I bought every possible product and what I found was that no single product has the ability to completely clear acne, since it comes from so many sources.
Accutane will have the highest ability to help, but the side effects are very harsh, and the acne still comes back.
Acne is caused by genes, stress, diet, excercize and several other factors, and no one particular change, be it in diet or meds or cream, can address all of those issues.
I read a book http://bambiberg.acnefree.hop.clickbank.… that really made me understand this, and when I finally used the correct combination of lifestyle changes, my acne disappeared in just a few days. However, do not get this book, if you are not willing to follow through. Change is hard, I am the first to admit, but the payoff is awesome, because I am acne free.
GET THE ACCUTANE. You will be able to live with any side effects much better than living with the acne.
My fiancee had cystic acne, from his teenage years to his mid twenties, much like you. He had it on his face and back; there were some day the swells on his back were so painful he couldn’t sit back in a chair. Finally, he saw a dermatologist and was prescribed Accutane. Expensive, yes. Worth it, totally. His side effects were dryness (on his lips, to the point they were cracking) and he developed yeast infections in his armpits. But you know what? He’d rather shave his armpits and apply cream when necessary than go back to the boils on his back. We both swear by it.
If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.
For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.
Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.

when I was 16-18, I had cystic acne although a “lite” version. Accutane cured it after a bunch of other treatments that did not. The lingering effect is that my eyelashes are not as thick as when I was a kid. I am still oily with my skin. Accutane only temporarily disrupts the oil production of your skin follicles.
You have to get your liver tested regularly because it is hard on your liver.
I was a geek before the treatment. I received confidence and started getting girls. It was a life changing treatment for me.
The effect of it was permanent although some people do multiple treatments. I am 42 now. Do it.
My son and daughter both have used Accutane with WONDERFUL results. My daugher have very severe acne and on occasion would get the cystic acne. She took it for 6 months and honestly within 1 1/2 weeks there was a remarkable difference. My son had the same results. The worst side effect is severe dry skin, you have to use lots of lotion and chap stick. The best lotion is Aquaphor, on your face, body and lips. But, the benefits from this drug are well worth the side effects.
Its been my experience in healthcare that this has no “cure” per say, but can only be managed. It comes and and goes in the way your body goes through its normal periodic changes about every seven years or so. You should try supplementing with vitamins A and E when not on the Accutane.
if you have it real bad. you will have to take the accutane.
but it is real bad on you for a month or so! But if you can get rid of
real bad acne it is worth it ! you don’t wanna go around for the next 20 years or so like this! Do it now I am 35 so i know
my dad is a dermatoligist and both my brother and sister have gone on accutane adn it worked very well, although it doesnt completely get rid of acne it gets rid of just random pimples and stuff so after u use it still stay away from greasy food and caffeine in excess (these are not totally off limits) one of the main problems of accutane is that i can stunt growth but u r probly fine at 24 and also you can’t get pregnant when you are on accutane or else there will be serious problems with you baby and also although it doesnt happen to everyone it can make you kinda bitchy (this happend to my sister but she is kinda bitchy even with out it) also if you dont get pimples very often then you can have the occasional ones injected with cortozone and that makes them go away too but if you dont want to do either of these and you have a little extra money you can get retin-a (75 dollars per tube and you would probly go through 2 tubes) you use that every day for sixth months and that basically has the same effect as accutane, retin-a is what i use because i am too young to use accutane and it works really well but it makes you skin peal a little (but it doesnt really dry out your skin)
I can really sympathize with you. I started breaking out with it, same thing, when I was 32. I am now 44 and I still have cystic acne. They wanted to put me on accutane, but after I did my own research on side affects, I decided it was not for me. Way too many negative ones. Thankfully since I am a female I can use birth control pills to keep it under control. Doesn’t help you if you are a male. I would recommend seeing an acupuncturist/traditional Chinese medicine doctor. Be sure to find one that knows his/her stuff. They can get your body back in balance. I am actually going to see one next week.Eating habits play a part of it, I found out that being oily skinned, any kind of nuts will break me out. And what ever you do, don’t try to pop them, cysts, it left me with some deep pockets. Stay patient, easier said than done, and hang in there. In as far as accutane, it is up to you. I do have some friends that said it worked great for them, some had to get treated again a couple years later, but I would out way the risk before deciding.
